I'm a big fan of the Street Fighter games and art, so it is such a joy to hold this thick enormous artbook book in hand. However, the joy may be offset slightly if you have bought the earlier edition SF20: The Art of Street Fighter that was released in 2009. Five years have passed and now the 25th anniversary edition is out. This updated edition has 448 pages, that's 128 pages more than the SF20. Binding feels alright for a book this thick but I will still want to be careful though. Both are still paperback. The original edition for this book is actually the Japanese artbook ストリートファイターアートワークス 極. Udon has translated that to English which is great because there are commentary from the artists and several pages of interviews. Other differences would be the lack of dust jacket in SF25, and the use of slightly glossier ink. This is a wonderful collection of Street Fighter art featuring an incredible amount of artwork. You'll see a lot of character art from the various generations of the game. There are sketches, splash art, game poses, promotional art and more. I like the Street Fighter art for their dynamism. The illustrations are divided into chapters by artists, namely:ã‚ãã¾ã‚“ (Akiman) | blog西æ‘ã‚ヌ (Kinu Nishimura)CRMKイケノ (Daigo Ikeno)大ã¡ã‚ƒã‚“ (Daichan)ãˆã ã‚„ã‚“ (Edayan)森気楼 (Shinkiro)ãƒãƒªã‚´ãƒ³ãƒ¼ãƒ”クãƒãƒ¥ã‚¢ã‚º (Polygon Pictures)A new chapter with art from Polygon Pictures is included. They are the ones who created the black ink splashy art for Super Street Fighter IV. Some of the works are featured in the art book Street Fighter IV & Super Street Fighter IV: Official Complete Works except they are printed smaller here. Many new artists and their works are also featured in the latter half of the book.Definitely worth the money. Highly recommended.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
This is mainly a comparison review, noting the changes from SF20 to this release, SF25. Skip down a few paragraphs for that.SF25 is a behemoth 446-page, nearly four-and-a-half pound book. It is a remarkable collection of art spanning dozens of games and is the best SF book in my decent collection of over a dozen such titles. It features art from a plethora of excellent artists, presented in solid binding and printed on high-quality paper. While I’ve seen better bindings, my copy of SF20 has lasted five years with no trouble (same quality) and the paper is wonderful. It is, without a doubt, a must-have for anyone interested in SF art and has been offered at a tremendously-reasonable price. I used to pay twice as much for half when I was importing Capcom books from Japan. This is a five-star purchase and the only reason to doubt would be if you already own SF20. If you don’t, buy this book. If you do, however, let’s compare…The page count has risen almost 130 pages (from 320 to 448). While that is a hefty tally, realize that still means 320 pages are identical or almost identical. What is added is almost entirely newer games.Among these added pages you’ll find 18 pages of interviews, 8 new illustrator sections, and 28 new pages of Polygon Pictures art. The latter has all the newest Super Street Fighter IV (and SSFIV: Arcade Edition) art and a ton of Street Fighter x Tekken art. You will not find the newest Ultra Street Fighter IV art here. The intro has fourteen pages of exclusive art (7 two-page spreads featuring new works by the likes of Kinu Nishimura, Bengus & Shinkiro, etc. all fantastic). Also littered throughout are recent calendar artwork and a few bits & pieces missed from SF20.If you own SF20, this isn’t necessarily a must-buy. It’s excellent and wonderful but you have to gauge if 130 pages is worth the cash. If you already have SFxT Artworks, you likely have a lot (but not all, I don’t think) of that art. If you own the SFIV + SSFIV Official Complete Works, that book has most of this, but not the AE characters (Yun, Yang, Evil Ryu & Oni) and some of the art specific to the AE upgrade. If you have both SF20 and SFxT Artworks, you might want to pass.If you just have SF20, weigh the price tag with the additions. I had no trouble plunking down the cash; the book is spectacular. But almost 2/3rds of this is the same as the last release. What is new though is certainly high-quality and the cover/back and spine are all wonderful. It sits on my shelf, massive but perfectly placed. This book is amazing.
Terrific book that's 400+ pages of stunning artwork to celebrate 25 years of Street Fighter. The book is broken up in to sections for each artist with their comments, and where each artist has also provided an original piece of art for the book's opening, and covers every Street Fighter game from Street Fighter 2 to Street Fighter IV and the various crossover and VS titles.Bonus points for the hilarious and absurd cutaway diagram for Shadowloo's island hideout!!The book is highly recommended for all Street Fighter fans and those who love great artwork and video game art books!
Any true fan is going to love it!
Fantastic curation of art throughout the years. The binding is fine as long as you don't violently turn the pages (I saw some reviews complaining about this). Some of the older images are a little pixelated but I'll chalk that up to weaker scanning capabilities from back in the day. There's some truly beautiful artwork in this book. Pages and colors are very bright.
SO MUCH ART SO LITTLE TIME LOVE THIS ITS AN UNREAL COLLECTION ART MASTER WORKS
The ultimate book for a fan of SF. I love it and it contains many pieces of work throughout the years and details on artist thoughts of different pieces.
448 pages should be hardback but still good
A history from the series of street fighter with original concept and famous illustrators from Capcom. This one groups only the capcom artists and represents really the hearts of the franchise. It's a little less big than the Udon artbook but you could find some exclusive artworks inside.
